Barbara E. Nelan is an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta. Before joining the United States Attorney’s Office in 1997, she was a prosecutor for the Georgia Attorney General’s Office and before that a law clerk for the Honorable G. Earnest Tidwell in the Northern District of Georgia. Prior to her legal career Ms. Nelan, a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Louisiana, taught accounting at the University of New Orleans.

Using her accounting and prosecution background, while at the United States Attorney’s Office, Ms Nelan has specialized in the prosecution of complex financial crime. Most recently, she has been on the prosecution team of every successful trial conviction of Mortgage Fraud in the Northern District of Georgia. She has presented lectures on mortgage fraud to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Reserve, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Bar and various industry groups.

Ms. Nelan received her JD with distinction and LLM with distinction from Emory Law School, Atlanta, Georgia. She also holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees.

Ms. Nelan is admitted to practice in state and federal court in Georgia and the Supreme Court of the United States.
